Omaha: An Overview

Omaha, Nebraska was founded in 1854 and was once considered the “gateway to the west” for pioneers making their journeys toward the Pacific coast. All that changed on the cusp of the 20th century, when Omaha hosted the World’s Fair in 1898 and established itself as a city not only to be passed through. Omaha resides in southeastern Nebraska, a part of the state that borders Iowa to the west, Missouri to the southeast, and Kansas to the South. The eastern part of the city resides in the Missouri flood plain. Omaha is 130.58 square miles large, and as of the 2010 census, the population of Omaha is 408,958 people.

Omaha is currently the largest city in Nebraska, and one of the 50 largest cities in America, where it resides along the southeastern boarder of the state. Omaha has steadily become a city of diverse industry, known best for its telecommunications, finance, and architecture/construction industries. Furthermore, Omaha supports five Fortune 500 companies including Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and ConAgra Foods. Omaha is located in the Missouri River Valley and rests its eastern edge just along the Missouri River.
